Interesting Information
Just the Facts
Prior to European colonization Mexico was inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous people known as Native Mexicans. There were many great civilizations that arose in Mexico. Among those were the Maya and the Aztec. The Aztec were the last great civilization and were still in power when Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in 1521 conquered them and claimed Mexico for Spain.
Spain ruled Mexico for approximately 300 years. In 1810, Mexico revolted against Spanish rule when Father Miguel Hidalgo rallied support for an independent Mexico. Father Hidalgo did not live to see Mexican independence, but in 1821 Mexico defeated the Spanish and became an independent nation.
