South America

Interesting Information

History & Culture

South America was first populated approximately 14,000 years ago by migrants from Asia by way of a land bridge from Siberia to Alaska. These indigenous people spread throughout North and South America creating small communities and large empires. Their descendants are known as Pueblos Indígenas (Indigenous People) in most of South America. There are more than 350 indigenous groups in South America. Each tribe has their own language and religious beliefs.

In 1494, South America was divided by a treaty between Spain and Portugal and in 1616 the Dutch settled in Guyana. Portuguese is the most common language spoken in South America followed closely by Spanish. Dutch, which is the official language of Suriname comes in third. English, French and Indigenous languages are also spoken on the South American continent.

Population & Language

South America is home to about 430 million people, with Brazil, Colombia, and Argentina having the largest populations. Most people live in cities, and the continent is one of the most urbanized in the world. Spanish is the most widely spoken language, followed by Portuguese in Brazil. Indigenous languages such as Quechua, Aymara, and Guaraní remain important, while Dutch, French, and English are spoken in smaller countries. Christianity is the dominant religion, though Indigenous traditions and beliefs are still practiced, often blending with modern faiths.

Geography & Climate

South America stretches from the Caribbean to Patagonia and includes some of the world’s most striking landscapes. The Andes run along its western edge, while the Amazon Basin covers much of the north with rainforest and rivers. Other features include the fertile Pampas in Argentina and the Atacama Desert in Chile. The continent’s climate is just as diverse, with tropical heat in the Amazon, temperate zones in the south, and alpine conditions in the Andes. This variety of environments has shaped how people live, farm, and settle across the continent.
